My Mother's Only Child. Self Healing

On this Mother's Day, I am currently healing from oral surgery. It is the first time that I ever had any type of surgery and had to be put under. This experience brought out my anxiety in the worst way to the point that when I was fading out, I cried out for my Mom. Yes, I cried out for my mom in spirit because every since I was a child, anytime when I was afraid I cried out to God and for my mom. My mom, my protector and now my healing hands. As I begin my journey of healing, I needed that reminder that I am not alone. This may be a brief post but it is a reminder, God always has me and my Mom is always there!!! Happy Mother's Day, Now and Forever.  My Mother's Only Child Sherri M. Littleton

My Mother's Only Child: Worry about Yourself!

Mamma always said that she raised me to be different, not to ever settle but excel! In doing so, she prepared me for compliments, success and jealousy. Not jealousy of me having things but resentment that I was Loved, encouraged and protected by her! It took me to reach my adult years to truly understand what she meant. Many people that I know were also raised by divorced parents, single parents and many had both parents still in the house. However only a handful of us were raised to know the sky had no limits and therefore we were always encouraged to chase our dreams. My mother raised me to go for what I wanted no matter how long it took or how scary the road was to get there. Try, try harder, start over and then Achieve!!!  It took me years to understand that others settling in Life isn't my problem because I was raised to know that I don't have to!   Thank you mama. My Mother's Only Child 3. Smarty Pants

I can be a lot. I know this very well but a lot was expected of me. My mom and her siblings, especially her older brother Robert (who is now in Heaven with her), always discussed how she was one of the smartest kids in their school growing up. I laughed at the stories my uncle  would tell about how my mom was so smart that she was able to skip grades and be in class with him. He joked about how she would have to stand on the chair to see over the class as a teacher's assistant (my mom was short and so am I).  She was always at the top of her class and therefore good grades was expected of me. However,  as my mom would say, I waited to college to actually enjoy school and value my education. Many many degrees later, she was right. On her birthday, April 16th, I will have a bowl of her favorite ice cream and indulge in one of her favorite meals. I will also celebrate the years that she was alive, remember the goals that she had and the sacrifices that sh...

My Mother's Only Child 2.

I've always loved makeup. I remember watching my mom put on her foundation and lipstick...Fashion Fair rum raisin to be specific.  During her life, she was very brand loyal. She found a product and stuck with it. Every single morning she had a routine of waking up early to get ready, pray, turn on the news while ironing our clothes and proceeded to cook breakfast before she woke me up for school. Then the final touches was her combing her hair, putting on perfume and then her makeup. I would just watch in awe while hoping I too would be able to do that. Makeup. Many girls who had a mother that wore some makeup wanted to play in their mother's makeup bag and I definitely did.  It got to the point that she got me my own caboodle of kiddie makeup with glitter and stickers. But that wasn't good enough for me.       One day she saw me take her makeup sponge and put her shade of foundation all over may face. The problem is my mom was a f...

My Mother's Only Child

As my Mother's only child, I was raised a bit spoiled. LOL, most only children are. But I knew I was loved and protected. From early on, if I fell my mother would pick me up,  show me how to stand, walk and present myself well. She taught me how to pronounce things, hold my fork and eat at the dinner table. I knew how to put together an outfit without it being a name brand or expensive. You don't need a lot of money to look good, just have taste.  She also took me to church and would also be what she referred to as 'the taxi' for my friends and I when we went to cultural events. My mother's goal was for me to explore different things to understand the world and I did, I am and will continue to.       My first concert was Gladys Knight and I remember it because it was my first time at the St. Louis Fox theater. I wore my Easter dress because it was the most formal attire as a kid. I remember standing and being put on a seat to ...

My Mother's Only Daughter

January 10, 2023     Today, I decided to not survive, but thrive! A few years ago I started writing on my blog again after the passing of my beautiful Mother, Alma Jean Dortch Littleton. It helped me to vent and at that time, begin my Life without her. But, I am not without her...she's here. I can feel her protecting me and guiding my decisions every day. She is just not here physically. Although many people in my family would always call me her junior, it is more apparent now. The way I jumped into hosting mode to make sure my entire home was cleaned, food stocked, fresh sheets and towels available for family coming from out of town for her funeral, all while looking well put together, was such a mom thing. I made sure everyone was comfortable and couldn't stop cleaning and hosting. I could see the worry in my aunts, uncle and cousins eyes. I couldn't stop making sure everything was perfect.       Perfect for MY MOM's FUNERAL and for the family. She ...
