My Mother's Only Daughter

January 10, 2023     Today, I decided to not survive, but thrive! A few years ago I started writing on my blog again after the passing of my beautiful Mother, Alma Jean Dortch Littleton. It helped me to vent and at that time, begin my Life without her. But, I am not without her...she's here. I can feel her protecting me and guiding my decisions every day. She is just not here physically. Although many people in my family would always call me her junior, it is more apparent now. The way I jumped into hosting mode to make sure my entire home was cleaned, food stocked, fresh sheets and towels available for family coming from out of town for her funeral, all while looking well put together, was such a mom thing. I made sure everyone was comfortable and couldn't stop cleaning and hosting. I could see the worry in my aunts, uncle and cousins eyes. I couldn't stop making sure everything was perfect.       Perfect for MY MOM's FUNERAL and for the family. She ...

Surviving My Mother's Death. October 7 & 8 2021.

Oct 7, 2019 changed my Life! That was the day that I lost my best friend and Mother, Alma D. Littleton. She was the most amazing mother and friend a child could wish for. Being that I was in fact her ONLY child and raised solely by her after my parents divorce, my entire life has been put into a whirlwind of emotions filled with the desire to make sure she has the best headstone (still not satisfied)  to making my life a tribute to her wishes and desires for me.      In fact, I started this blog as part of an ongoing project that I am resuming to ensure I keep my focus on what I promised her, to make all of my dreams and her heard work for them come true.  I am MY Mother's ONLY child! Surviving My Mother's Death- Part 20.

I was looking at Meghan Markle's 40 for 40 initiative to mentor women in various fields and I was wondering how I can participate.  One of the ways I can help others, specifically women in similar positions, is to continue blogging the process of healing after my Mother's death.  I also decided to take 40 hours over the next few months or so, to create a project that can benefit women in need. My mother would love that. Sincerely, Sherri M. Littleton For My last blog post: https://sherrimlittleton.blogspot.com/2021/07/surviving-my-mothers-death-weekly-blog.html

Surviving My Mother's Death. Weekly blog. Part 19.

There are times times when I question everything. I question "why" to everything including my mother's death. Why was my mother taken that way? There was no warning. There was no building yourself for what was to come.  There was a misdiagnosis, then later a diagnosis then death the next day. Why as her only child was I put into the position to make decisions for the strongest yet most feminine person I knew?  Why was the best parent taken from me before either of us were ready?  Do you also have questions about your loved one's death? Don't stop. Don't feel bad about it. It is your right as their relative to question everything. You might finally get the correct answers that you deserve.  Sherri M. Surviving My Mother's Death. Weekly Post. Part 18.

It can be difficult to understand those of us who are our parent's only children. As the only child of my parent's marriage and My mother's only child, after their divorce, my mother raised me differently than perhaps some of my family and friends. I was never raised with  the sense that I couldn't achieve, no matter how long it took. As a kid, I always played  "in charge" of something in my finished basement with friends or stuffed animals. I'm sure there is a picture somewhere of me and my stuff animals or friends around a table where I'm telling them what to do. Bossy? Perhaps. Friendly and creative? Definitely. See, very different!       Also, I didn't like to share. For instance, sharing my toys was NOT in my vocabulary , LOL and honestly I still don't (men, money, etc).  But, I loved to have parties, be around others, go to events and be in organizations. I was never the type that wanted to stand alone all of the time. I was ...

Surviving My Mother's Death. Weekly Post. Part 17

A rebirth is sometimes necessary to move forward. Part of my process in healing from my Mother's death ( that is still weird for me to say), is understanding that I must become a different person, a woman that my mother  raised and groomed me to become. The next phase in healing is understanding WHO that woman really is.       One of the things I remember as a kid was watching my mother and imitating her moves including her walk, way of doing her hair, natural makeup, nails and her wardrobe. Walking in her high heels and playing dress-up with her clothes and jewelry was exciting. I'm sure many girls experience similar activities. Now, as a woman, I treasure all of those items that I inherited and the memories as well.  They will hell me in my journey of becoming Me. Sherri M. Surviving My Mother's Death. Weekly Post Part 16.

Yesterday was hard and if you recently had a close death in your family, those days will come without warning.  So what do you do when there is a triggered moment or day?   These are a few tips that work well for me: Step 1:  BREATHE.  Step 2.  Use a stress relief item that works for YOU (positive and legal).  Step 3. Then stay calm for a little bit longer using whatever needed to do so (positive and legal).  Step 4. Identify what triggered the sadness or episode and figure out how to remove or deal with it to work best for you and NOT against you.  Step 5. Realize that you are not superwoman or superman.  Continue to BREATHE. -Sherri M Littleton For previous posts: https://sherrimlittleton.blogspot.com/2021/06/surviving-my-mothers-death-part-15.html Note: (This blog is to help ME deal with the aftermath of my Mother's Death.)
